Distribution and Compatibility Notes

Many Linux distributions provide their own packages of the NVIDIA Linux Graphics Driver in the distribution's native package management format. These may integrate better with your distribution's framework; you may prefer to use the distribution-provided package instead of NVIDIA's official package.

SuSE users should read the SuSE NVIDIA Installer HOWTO before downloading the driver.

Installation instructions

  1. Download the driver (link above).

  2. Change to the directory containing the driver package.

  3. Run the installer as root:

One of the last installation steps will offer to update your X configuration file. You can:

  • Accept the offer,

  • Edit your X configuration file manually so that the NVIDIA X driver will be used, or

  • Run nvidia-xconfig

Note: Some hardware designs (for example notebooks with hybrid/Optimus graphics) may not be compatible if the integrated graphics cannot be disabled in hardware. Consult your system manufacturer to confirm compatibility.
